About Bamboo U
Based in Bali, we are a sustainable bamboo architecture and design workshop centre. Bamboo U was conceived by John Hardy to help teach people about the potential of bamboo as a green building material. The program was founded in 2015 in collaboration with IBUKU by Orin Hardy and Maria Farrugia.

This 3-day bamboo design and construction course in Bali is an introduction into the concepts and practical techniques of bamboo architecture. You will do hands-on work alongside our master carpenters and learn the construction potential and limitations of this sustainable material.

Detailed Daily Program
Description
Our 3 day Bamboo Experience offers a quick and comprehensive introduction to bamboo as the sustainable timber of the future. Throughout this course you will visit our processing factory and engage manually with the material during hands on workshops, exploring the fundamentals of lightweight structural systems. You will learn how to design bamboo structures following the practice of IBUKU, making scaled models using handcrafted bamboo sticks. You will also learn the fundamentals of bamboo joinery techniques by working with the material under the guidance of the master carpenters that helped to build the Green School.

Understanding Bamboo

- Learn about bamboo's potential and limitations as a building material
- Tour IBUKU's bamboo factory, discover how bamboo is treated and processed before use
- Build with Bamboo by participating in our structural systems workshop
