About Juma Music Projects
We are a collaborative music organisation based in Belgium with the aim of making African music accessible to the world. As well as repairing and making traditional instruments, we organise djembe, kalimba, mbira and African dance workshops.
Details
The Malinké people say that a skilled djembe drummer 'can make the djembe talk'. The drum has been used in West Africa for centuries to tell emotional stories with rhythm. On this half-day workshop, you will learn about the drum's history, as well as how to play traditional Djembe songs, rhythm technique, percussive bells and bass drums.

The drum playing workshop is divided into two parts:

Our studio is located in Merksem, Antwerp. It has almost 42,000 inhabitants. The Sportpaleis and the Lotto Arena are both located in the district of Merksem and host live music and festivals. The street with our venue is called Emiel Lemineurstraat and it is less than 100 metres from the tram (Merksem Gasthuishoeve) or bus station walking distance. Shopping and eating out is done on the busy Bredabaan street here, which is about 300 metres from Emiel Lemineurstraat walking distance, this way you can feel the locals and experience the Belgium architecture or fashion.
