Description

Enjoy a week of creativity, learning, experience sculpting with Romolo Del Deo in a natural light studio, outdoor excursions, dinners, inspiration and practice. 7 Day Workshop in two parts:

In the First Studio Segment, the objective of this workshop is to explore the creative transition from working with the observed world to working from their internal creative one. Using time tested techniques that have allowed artists for generations to find answers within themselves to express what they did not know they possessed. Using various media, the class will utilize methods of drawing in charcoal, modeling in clay and journaling to find pathways to develop ideas to express artistic vision. we will expand ideas into the realm of three dimensions, creating observations form our linear work as well as non-linear deductions and artistic directions. Using in-class lectures and discussions, each participant will develop an artists journal, building from the in-class artwork and developing the ideas and visual conclusions outside of class

In the second Dune Shack Studio Segment, takes place on the dunes back-shore exploring a method of idea mining that Romolo has used extensively in his work. Artists have been inspired by nature since the dawn of time, in this workshop you will go beach-combing along the ocean beach of National Seashore, collecting inspiration from the sea wrack which students will study in one of Provincetown's last dune shack studios. Drawings, journal notes, photography, and collecting will be used to discover inspiration and fuel ideas. This workshop is designed to build on the Studio Idea Building workshop that proceeds it but is not required. Due to transportation and space limitations, enrollment is limited to 4 students per Beachcombing workshop.

Detailed Daily Program

Introduction to Idea Building

Depending on the way the class as a whole progresses, and what the weather is for the week will govern to some extent the exact sequence of the workshop, as the Dune segment listed as Day 6 & 7 will be moved to the days with the most favorable weather for working outside. But if the weather is seasonably sunny, the program would be 5 days in the studio and 2 days on the dunes. The first studio will start with quick sketches in charcoal and clay from the model we will become familiar with the process and relax. The group will work for 3 hours, with regular breaks and discussions.

Second Studio Day Extending the Exploration

At 9:00 following upon the success of the previous day, duration of the model's poses will be extended and participants will be able to work for more extended periods of time, investing more into the studies they will be creating. Romolo will work both with individuals and with the group to help build the skills for eye training, which are the core method of his teaching, with regular discussions about art-making methods, group instruction and examples from past masters.

Second Studio Day & Museo dei Bozzetti

The third studio day starts with 8:00 catered breakfast, 9:00 studio. This is the mid-point of the retreat. Participants will have overcome blocks, uncertainty and typical obstacles that interfere with eye training and will be ready for an extended pose. Some students may prefer to work in simplified or abstract forms, others may wish to create more lifelike representations. The workshop is designed so everyone can follow their natural creative instincts.

Fourth Studio Day - Stock Taking

The fourth day is a stock-taking day, assessing what has been learned and what could still be mastered. Everyone's trajectory will be different. Training will take on a more individual relationship, with each participant getting significant personal instruction to guide their progress.

Fifth Studio Day - Studio Program Wrap Up

Fifth Studio Day starts as usual. Romolo will continue to work one on one with the participants, helping them to maintain their overall artistic vision. Everyone's trajectory by now will be different and the training will take on a more individual relationship, with each participant getting significant personal instruction to guide their sculpture's progress.

The Sixth Day - The Dunes Day One

On the 6th Day, the class moves from the studio to the Dunes. We will travel overland into the Cape Cod National Seashore Park to visit and stage our artistic explorations from one of the last remaining artist dune shacks. We will explore the beach, collecting driftwood and other forms found washed ashore to create motifs and compositions to work from and find inspiration in.

Final Day - The Dunes Day Two

The last day will be structured around combining lessons learned in the studio class with insights derived from beachcombing. Participants will be encouraged to work the found objects as both sculptural elements and as models for the creation of new sculptures, inspired by their forms. This day brings together the insights gained in working from the figure and in working with found forms, creating a synthesis where new ideas can come forward.
